New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd weighs in on the latest diversion to get us to talk about anything except that Barack Obama is probably going to coast to a second term and pummel Mitt Romney in November's election. Last week's media dustup between Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen who said Romney's wife Ann (or @AnnDRomney, her nom de Tweet) "never worked a day in her life" sure has got people talking, but about the wrong things. Writes Dowd,

"This latest kerfuffle is piffle, but it is another instance of Republicans dragging women back to the past to re-litigate issues they thought were long settled. Just as women had assumed their contraception rights were safe, they had considered the tiresome debate about working moms versus stay-at-home moms over....

For the most part, nobody’s casting aspersions on anybody else’s choices, which are often driven by economics. Women have so many choices that they’re overwhelmed by the stress of so many choices. The real issue is whether Mitt, a tycoon who has been swathed in an old-fashioned cocoon, understands the plight of working mothers and the rights of 21st-century women."

The Romney and Obama campaigns spent Thursday weighing in on Hilary Rosen’s remark that Ann Romney had “never worked a day in her life.” But Dems like Obama, Biden and their advisers, who are actually taking Mrs. Romney's side, are missing the point. When a wife of a billionaire businessman chooses to stay home and raise 5 children, she is probably paying for lots of help.

In the latest brilliant counterstrike against the GOP's War on Women, The Snatchel Project is encouraging craftswomen to send their anti-women congressmen knit and crocheted bags, pouches and decorations in the shape of their favorite ladyparts.

Thank you lady legislators! Bills are being proposed like this one in Ohio that would subject men seeking Viagra or a vasectomy to the same type of government intrusion women seeking birth control or an abortion are being subjected to. 

The GOP's war on women has enacted laws in at least 3 states and tried to pass them in several others that would require this painful and unnecessary procedure should a woman choose to end a pregnancy. The reporter, who was not pregnant, underwent the procedure and then wrote that mandating a transvaginal ultrasound is

"...not a choice to be made at a distance by elected officials with an ideological axe to grind, little medical knowledge and a belief that it's acceptable to require doctors to put unnecessary instruments inside women's bodies in an effort to achieve in practice what they can't constitutionally pass into law: an end to abortion."

After a brutal year of female-alienating policy debates, the GOP has settled on a message it apparently thinks will appease the ladies: "Don't Let Barack Obama & Democrats Insult Women, MOMS DO WORK!

Yesterday, GOP Presidential contender Mitt Romney said he looked to his wife Ann for advice on women and the economy. But @AnnDRomney (who online denizens know by her newly debuted Twitter account) is no Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama or even Laura Bush. Mrs. Romney, in the words of one female Democratic adviser, has "never worked a day in her life." Yes, she's raised five sons, which no one doubts is a hard job. But unlike most American women, @AnnDRomney has never had to make the difficult choice between work and family, let alone be dealt a "no choice" card like many women who need to earn a paycheck to support their family.

The notoriously (and some say ridiculously) right-wing news conglomerate agrees with the liberal left. Republican politicians are indeed jeopardizing women’s health and reproductive freedom and slandering those who try and stand in their way. The consequence? President Obama will coast to re-election with a double-digit lead.

Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke labeled a "slut" by conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh says his apology changes nothing. Last Wednesday, Limbaugh branded Fluke a "slut" for her support of the Obama Administration's new policy on contraception. The radio show host repeated the charges on Thursday, saying: "Well, what would you call someone who wants us to pay for her to have sex? What would you call that woman? You'd call 'em a slut, a prostitute or whatever." Although Limbaugh later issued a lukewarm apology, as many as nine advertisers have pulled their ads from his show.
