With 25,000 retweets in the first 10 minutes, the new pope, Francis, tweeting on the old @Pontifex account, has only 800,000 more tweets to go top @BarackObama's election night all-time winner. The tweet, "HABEMUS PAPAM FRANCISCUM", roughly translates as "We Have Pope Francis." Someone please, clue him in about using all caps.

Pope Benedict XVI sent his first tweet this morning from his Twitter account @Pontifex.

The three grammatically correct sentences weighing in at a perfect 140 characters, sent from an iPad, garnered nearly 5,700 RTs in just a couple of minutes according to Business Insider.

Just two months after he joined Twitter, Pope Beneduct XVI (aka @Pontifex) has resigned.

All sacreligiousness aside, Pope Benedict XVI has opened a Twitter account.

He hasn't issued a tweet yet from his new platform - @pontifex. That social media /slash/ blessed event is slated for Wednesday, December 12, at which time he will answer questions about matters of the faith that he is now accepting via the hashtag #askpontifex, according to the New York Times.
