Far from becoming irrelevant in the digital age, libraries in New York City and around the nation are thriving: adding weekend and evening hours; hiring more librarians and staff; and expanding their catalog of classes and services to include things like job counseling, coding classes and knitting groups.

It's a sign of the times that we no longer get our information from musty old volumes and the daily papers hung on racks with poles. This fall the New York Public Library will seek to bridge broadband access gap between rich and poor and begin lending out wi-fi hotspots that will allow users to access high-speed Internet from their homes.
