Twitter Bars Milo Yiannopoulos in Wake of Leslie Jones’s Reports of Abuse

Twitter Bars Milo Yiannopoulos in Wake of Leslie Jones’s Reports of Abuse | Communications Major | Scoop.it

The ban against Mr. Yiannopoulos, a technology editor at the conservative news site Breitbart and known by his Twitter handle, @Nero, follows a campaign of prolonged abuse against Leslie Jones, a comedian and co-star of the recently released “Ghostbusters” movie. The film and its stars have come under fire from various parts of the internet for months, after it was first revealed that the reboot of the 1984 film would feature an all-female cast.

Ms. Jones in particular has borne the brunt of the online abuse in recent days, especially since the release of “Ghostbusters” in the United States on Friday. Hundreds of anonymous Twitter commenters hurled racist and sexist remarks at the star’s Twitter account, rallied and directed by Mr. Yiannopoulos this week.

A Lot of People Are Very Upset that an Indian-American Woman Won the Miss America Pageant

A Lot of People Are Very Upset that an Indian-American Woman Won the Miss America Pageant | Communications Major | Scoop.it

Hateful tweets hit an all-time racist apex on Sunday night when an Indian-American woman was named Miss America 2014. We don't know where most of these people live (could it be Kansas, who sent a blonde-haired, blue-eyed babe with a bow and arrow to the pagent)? Sadly, some of the same people who don't like President Obama's "look" used the social media platform to once again behave badly.

In Trayvon Martin Case, Plenty of Online Misinformation

In Trayvon Martin Case, Plenty of Online Misinformation | Communications Major | Scoop.it

The shooting death of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teen, has sparked one of the biggest online conversations of the year. At times, though, the misinformation can be daunting. Conservative bloggers have posted fake photos of the teen looking menacing. And who knows who is behind publishing the (wrong) address of his killer, a white neighborhood watch man? Or, behind a fake RealFerrellWill Twitter account that proposed to raise money for the Martin family based on retweets.

AP Issues Guidelines for Using the Term 'Alt-Right'

AP Issues Guidelines for Using the Term 'Alt-Right' | Communications Major | Scoop.it

President-elect Donald Trump has faced mounting pressure to repudiate the alt-right. Now, the leading style guide for U.S. journalists says,

""Avoid using the term generically and without definition...because it is not well known and the term may exist primarily as a public-relations device to make its supporters’ actual beliefs less clear and more acceptable to a broader audience... . In the past we have called such beliefs racist, neo-Nazi or white supremacist."

Santorum Denies Calling Obama the N-Word

Santorum Denies Calling Obama the N-Word | Communications Major | Scoop.it

The Internet was buzzing on Friday morning that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum may have almost dropped the n-bomb on President Barack Obama. Speaking to a group of voters in Janesville, Wisconsin on Wednesday, the candidate seemed to catch himself before using a word that sounds like “n*gger” to describe the president.

First it was "pink bowling balls," now this. I don't know about you and your experiences with bigots, but where homophobia flows, racism is usually not too far behind.
