We are all aware of the frequent use of cellphones by our friends, peers, and family. There seems to be an addiction to cellphone use, but what if we had the power to lessen the addiction of others around us. According to a study by Michigan State, cellphone usage may be contagious because of our need for social inclusion. Humans have a almost a basic need for social inclusion. If you're at a diner with your friends and they all decide to pull out their phones at the table, it is much more difficult to be the odd man out and sit in silence than it is to join in and zone out on the cellphone. A tip that can help curb this urge is to have everyone put their cellphones in the middle of the table and the first one to reach for it has to pay the bill. People do need to realize the isolating feeling that they are giving their friends when they pull out their phones to zone out in a social situation. It feels like they are saying, "what is on my phone is more interesting than you", and it can be hurtful.
